Vending Machines for Wine to Enter Pennsylvania? Sounds great! But Not So Fast…
July 28, 2009
It’s a known fact that the alcohol laws of Pennsylvania are among the strictest in the country. So, at first glance, the news articles on Pennsylvania getting wine kiosks in grocery stores sounded amazing, considering you can only buy wine in state stores as of now. But, upon closer review of this news, it turns out that instead of the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board making wine sales easier, it sounds like the wine kiosks may just be more of a hassle after all. In order to buy wine at the vending machine, customers must first insert their driver’s license to prove they are over 21 then wait until PLCB employees verify that the person is, in fact, the person whose photo is on the license. Then, if approved, the person must blow into a breath-testing machine to prove they are not intoxicated before purchasing the wine. Also, the wine kiosks would have limited hours because they could only be open when PLCB employees were working to identify customers. All of this seems hard to fathom right now, but who knows, maybe the wine vending-machines won’t be so bad after all…
