Art + Allegory Exhibition at Edge Gallery in Philadelphia, October 2 – October 25
September 21, 2009
Beginning October 2 from 6-9 pm and running through October 25, 2009, edge gallery in Philadelphia presents Art + Allegory, an exhibition that features the work of three gallery artists: Salvador Di Quinzio, Harkrader, and Ray Mantella.
What is allegory? It is a symbolic representation, or the expression of symbolic generalizations, of human existence. Art + Allegory brings together three gallery artists whose work is imbued with symbolism and ambiguity. Each artist presents a body of work that begs question and deeper appreciation of the artist’s visual interpretations of the world around him. The goal of this exhibit is to highlight the different artists’ interpretations through the unique vernacular in which they express the abstract, both visually and stylistically. The desire to create emotion within the viewer through non-representational and/or symbolic expression is the unifying element among the artists.
Salvador Di Quinzio, originally from Venezuela, lives and works in the Philadelphia area. His work is the most allegorical of the trio with his routes in Latin American surrealism. Hailing from Virginia, Harkrader’s paintings are full of symbolic generalizations as well as pure abstract expressionism; his sculpture reflects his constant questioning and soul-searching. Ray Mantella, of Toronto, Canada, is a master of the illusory form: his ethereal landscape illusions both reference and create nature. The three distinct voices of this exhibition come together to force the viewer to ponder both the art and allegory of the paintings in the show.
edge gallery invites you to come and see this show with the hope that it stirs the imagination and invokes a greater appreciation for the diversity of abstract expression in art.
