Carolyn Malachi, PaperTrees, April King, and Bohemian Sunrise Amongst Performers at 2009 Green Fest Philly, Sunday Sept. 13

September 1, 2009

On Sunday, September 13, from 11:15am to 5:45pm, come out for the 2009 GreenFest Philly, the Philadelphia/Delaware Valley’s largest green living event, which will feature a lineup of musicians whose sounds range from alternative pop and folky jazz, to afro-beat and punk. Hitting the mainstage will be:

11:15am: Bohemian Sunrise

Known for their genre-transcending arrangements they have shared the stage with such notable acts as Ziggy Marly & The Melody Makers, The Steve Miller Band, The String Cheese Incident and Rusted Root. Philly Edge claims, “Using world beats punctuated with jamband optimism and jazzy instrumentation, South Jersey-based Bohemian Sunrise creates songs of both musical and lyrical depth.” But don’t just take their word for it. Come and experience an exciting, passionate and energetic set for yourself!

12:45pm: Singing for AJ

Philly born, Miami raised and Los Angeles tested, singer/songwriter multi-hyphenate artist Ken-Ali centers his own identity around a quest for Love and ‘understanding of the highest level possible’, two concepts he considers intertwined and interchangeable. The debut EP, “The Book of Job: An LA Experience,” blends alt-pop energy and haunting, thoughtful lyrics to examine the connection between homelessness, artistic pursuits and mental anguish he observed (and experienced) during his first few years living in LA. “The Book of Job…” balances pop sensible arrangements and meaningful words w/ frenetic guitar, bass & organ riffs from Perdomo and hard driving drums from Derek Cintron (DC3, Paulina Rubio, Christian Castro, Dreaming in Stereo). Part of the cd proceeds benefit organizations dedicated to the support of artists, succor of the mentally distressed, and eradication of homelessness.

3:30pm: Carolyn Malachi

Baltimore vocalist, producer and uber smart chick Carolyn Malachi is back with her second CD “Revenge of the Smart Chicks II: Ambitious Gods.” Malachi describes her brand of music as “haute eclectic soular blues.” Malachi, who is the great-granddaughter of jazz pianist John Malachi, has created her own modern infectious gumbo of jazz hip hop and spoken word. ROTSC II is the stirring and genre bending follow-up to her 2008 debut “Revenge of the Smart Chicks.” The first project spawned a movement, blog and the non-profit Smart Chicks Inc. The organization is dedicated to developing visibility and leadership opportunities for women in the arts. Carolyn is someone you won’t want to miss!

4:00pm: April King

April has toured and recorded internationally, performing in Black Lily’s House Band (Paris & LA, hosted by Black Thought of the Roots), The Agape International House Band (Rickie Byars Beckwith) and with artists such as Saul Williams, Tony Allen, Ty, Jazzyfatnastees, Les Nubians, Gina Loring, and many more. Whether she’s on the stage rhyming while playing her electro-acoustic drumset, delivering a new Spoken Word poem, or teaching a youth music production or writing workshop, King is a natural performance artist. Originating an exclusive free hip-hop fusion sound, Kings trademark style has led her on musical adventures with an eclectic variety of some of the worlds most brilliant artists. A pioneer in the expansion of five-way independence, King sits poised on her throne in command of a Roland V- Pro electronic drumset, acoustic drums, organic cymbals, the microphone and an arsenal of empowering and inspirational lyrics. Since she got her hands on the V-drums in 1998, King began her quest to bring live and improvised beats into sample and machine-based music through sound creation and electro-acoustic collaboration. Following the groove evolution of the Afrikan diaspora from drum’n'bass to funk, afro-beat to punk, house to hip-hop, rock to trip-hop, King inspires every audience to move to her transcendental grooves.

5:30pm: PaperTrees

“”Feist and Jason Molina made a baby?” No, that’s not gossip from the indie rock world-that’s what local gal-with-guitar Allison Polans wrote in the “Sounds Like” section of her MySpace page. It’s actually a pretty apt summation of her music: There’s both a sophisticated, sorta-jazzy tinge to her husky voice and arrangements (that’s the Feist gene), and an affecting, world-weary vibe in her simple, folky acoustic strumming and heartsick lyrics (that’s the DNA of Molina, of Songs: Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co. fame). Don’t be surprised to hear little tiny bits of Chan Marshall (aka Cat Power), PJ Harvey and Brandi Carlile in Polans’ delivery. But this growing baby seems talented enough to stand all on her own soon enough.”
