Gazela Primeiro and Jupiter
September 25, 2008
While many Philadelphians stroll along the Delaware waterfront simply to enjoy the view, there is more here at Penns Landing than meets the eye. A number of historic vessels help evoke Philadelphias rich maritime history, two of which are the tall ship Gazela and the tug Jupiter.
The barkentine Gazela Primeiro, a three-masted wooden sailing vessel dating from records as early as 1883, was built in Portugal and fished for cod in the Grand Banks of Newfoundland for nearly a century before coming to Philadelphia in 1971. The tugboat Jupiter, on the other hand, was built locally in a Philadelphia shipyard in 1902. She towed fuel ships and barges for the Standard Oil Company until World War II. Gazela and Jupiter are operated and maintained by the volunteers of the nonprofit Philadelphia Ship Preservation Guild, headquartered here at Penns Landing.
Both vessels participate in community events such as harbor festivals, educational programs and parades of sail both locally and elsewhere along the eastern seaboard. Tours of both ships are available in exchange for donations during the day on weekends and holidays when they are in port. One of the most exciting times of year for crew and public is the annual Haunted Ship, when Gazela and Jupiter are converted into terrifying theatrical sets for a truly unique haunted event. For dates and times, please visit us at www.gazela.org. All profits benefit the Philadelphia Ship Preservation Guild which preserves and maintains these two Philadelphia treasures.
The Guild always needs volunteers, and membership is open to the public. If you are interested in helping out, there are sessions for new volunteers throughout the year and public training classes in the spring. Gazela and Jupiter are also available for school tours, party rentals and receptions. To schedule your event.
